Physodes and the Phenolic Compounds of Brown Algae, Composition and Significance of Physodes in vivo
نویسنده
چکیده
The composition and significance of physodes, brown algal subcellulai bodies characterized by reactivity with vanillin-hydrochloric acid, have been the subject of debate for the past Century. This research is critically reviewed, and it is demonstrated that aJthough physodes aie primarily composed of phloroglucinol derivatives, they may also contain other tannins and terpenes. The recent discoveries of homologous series of phloroglucinol polymers in brown algal extracts provide an attractive chemical rationalization for the observed heterogeneity of physodes.

Physodes have been recognized in meristodermic and promeristematic cells by correlated light- and electron-microscope investigations using different fixation procedures. They are vesicles which contain an osmiophilic material of phenolic nature. Their content changes in appearence according to the fixative used. Osmiophilic deposits are often associated with coiled and disturbed lamellar format...

The antioxidative, antimicrobial and antiproliferative potentials of the methanol extracts of the lichen species Parmelia sulcata, Flavoparmelia caperata, Evernia prunastri, Hypogymnia physodes and Cladonia foliacea were evaluated. The total phenolic content of the tested extracts varied from 78.12 to 141.59 mg of gallic acid equivalent (GA)/g of extract and the total flavonoid content from 20....

Seasonal changes in the biochemistry and photophysiology of the brown macroalga Cystoseira tamariscifolia was analyzed in southern Spain. Total carbon and nitrogen contents, phenolic compounds, antioxidant and photosynthetic activities were seasonally determined over two years. Carbon, nitrogen and photoprotective phenolic contents were higher in winter and spring than in summer and autumn. Ant...
